Two years ago, my client—who runs an electric vehicle infrastructure distribution company in the Netherlands—contacted me in a panic after receiving a shipment of 60 kW DC fast chargers he had ordered online from Alibaba through a certain Chinese manufacturer. At first glance, everything seemed perfect: a reasonable price, CE certification, and attractive photos. However, less than a month after they were put into service, three of these chargers had already broken down. They were sent back to the seller, which revealed that the CE certificate mentioned was a fake and consisted of a self-declaration issued by the factory. It turned out that these products had never been tested by reputable laboratories such as TUV and Bureau Veritas. As a result, not only did the buyer lose a significant amount of money on this transaction, but he also wasted time, as he had to cover all installation costs, deal with dissatisfied customers, order replacement products, and so on. This happened because he didn’t know what questions to ask before making the purchase. Having worked for many years with buyers sourcing electric vehicle charging stations in China, I have come to realize that there are several critical factors that play a key role during the first two weeks of the procurement process and that determine whether your business will be successful or not. In this article, I would like to discuss these factors with you.
OEM or ODM: Know What You’re Actually Buying
First, it is important to highlight the difference between the OEM and ODM models, as these terms may seem similar but actually involve significant differences in terms of lead times, minimum order quantities, and so on. The OEM model involves you providing a product that does not yet exist and submitting it to the factory for manufacture according to your specifications. In other words, you have the technical specifications for your own product, you provide your bill of materials, and you entrust the manufacturing to the factory. This is an attractive offer provided you already have your own product ready for manufacture, but it has drawbacks such as long lead times, tooling costs, high minimum order quantities, and design ownership.
ODM consists of choosing from existing products manufactured by the factory and customizing their appearance, for example by changing colors, packaging, software, etc. The lead time for ODM is 6 to 10 weeks, as the product has already been designed and certified. This is why ODM is favored by the majority of distributors launching on a new market. There have been instances where a buyer insisted on ordering an OEM product at the start and spent eight months developing it, wasting his opportunity and buying a product almost identical to those already on the market.
Certification: The One Thing You Cannot Take on Faith
Obtaining the CE marking is mandatory for all products sold in Europe. For electric vehicle charging stations, it is particularly important to comply with the requirements of the Low Voltage and EMC directives. It is best to ensure that a product from a reliable manufacturer has been independently tested in a certified laboratory such as TUV, Bureau Veritas, SGS, or Intertek. Be sure to request the test report. For Australia and New Zealand, you will need the applicable SAA and RCM certificates. For the United States and Canada, you will need ETL and UL certificates respectively. Such certificates are required in most commercial cases and are not issued through self-certification. You can verify UL and ETL certificates using UL Product iQ. Always ask for the test report. If the seller hesitates or provides you with only a single certification, something is wrong.
Factory Vetting: What the Alibaba Badge Won’t Tell You
The Gold Supplier status on Alibaba is simply a paid subscription; it says nothing about manufacturing quality. Reputable suppliers will be happy to give you a tour of their factory, whether virtually or in person. When it comes to DC fast chargers, you should verify the presence of a high-voltage test station and an aging machine, where the product undergoes endurance testing before shipment. The absence of an R&D department indicates that the supplier is selling devices from other manufacturers under its own brand. ISO 9001 certification means that the company maintains all required documentation and conducts regular internal audits. Any company that has been active in this sector for 8 to 10 years and exports its products would have a lot to lose by acting unethically.
MOQ, Pricing and Negotiation
For your first order: expect a minimum quantity of 10 to 50 units for ODM products and 100 units for customized OEM products. Regarding pricing: try to obtain three quotes — any price more than 20% lower than the average should raise a red flag. Payment terms typically require a 30% deposit on the first order, with the balance due before shipment. When placing a production order, be sure to request samples first — at least two or three units that you can test yourself or through an independent lab. This is far less costly than ending up with an entire batch of defective products.
IP Protection
Brand image: file a trademark registration application in China before launching mass production. Product design: ask your attorney to draft confidentiality agreements and OEM contracts that include intellectual property clauses before sharing technical data. Firmware and software: from the outset, ask yourself — can I access the firmware source code? Who holds the software license, me or the product? In reality, the intellectual property risk is virtually zero in an ODM arrangement, since you’re working on the factory’s existing platform. What really matters is your brand, your customers, and your market knowledge.
